Frederick Steele (January 14, 1819 – January 12, 1868) was an American military officer and Union Army general during the American Civil War. He was born in Delhi, New York, and graduated from West Point in 1843. Steele served in the Mexican-American War, Indian Wars, and the Civil War. He notably commanded the Union Brigades at the Battles of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, and Bayou Fourche. After the Civil War, Steele was appointed military governor of Arkansas but faced controversy and criticism for his handling of Reconstruction efforts. Steele died in San Mateo, California, in 1868, and he is buried at the United States Military Academy's cemetery at West Point.
